Diagnosis

Pulmonary embolism is a serious health condition where there is a sudden blocked of a major blood vessel in your lung. This major blockage is normally caused by a blood clot. There are a number of factors that can put you at risk for a blood clot including your age, your lifestyle and your family history. However, women across the world were not informed that they too were at a risk for PE simply because of the birth control they take.

Yaz, Yasmin and Ocella birth control all increase the risk of pulmonary embolism due to the fourth generation hormone called drospirenone (DRSP) that causes blood clots to form in the body. These blood clots can travel to your heart, your liver, your brain and your lungs, which is what happens during pulmonary embolism and Yaz.

Diagnosing Yaz Pulmonary Embolism

It can be very difficult to diagnose PE because often the warning signs are found too late. Furthermore, PE symptoms can indicate several different problems including heart attack, pneumonia or even simply a panic attack.

Your doctor will start by assessing your health history, family history and performing a physical exam to determine your health. Make sure tell your doctor about any medication, including Yaz birth control, that you are taking. By simply taking Yaz, you are at a greater risk for pulmonary embolism.

Your doctor may also need to perform one or all of the following tests to further assess your condition and reason for your symptoms:

  • CT scan – a CT scan is one of the most common methods for diagnosing Yaz pulmonary embolism. The scan works by using a dye in your body to visualize the area and detect anything that appears out of the ordinary.
  • Chest x-ray- a chest x-ray can look for any conditions that might be similar to PE. If something is found, then the Yaz PE problems may be eliminated.
  • Lung scan – another method of diagnosing Yaz pulmonary embolism is through a lung scan called a ventilation-perfusion scan (V/Q). This scan can rule out PE.
  • Pulmonary angiogram – pulmonary angiogram will provide a picture of the blood flow in the arteries to your lungs. Because of the difficulty in administration it comes with several health risks which is why pulmonary angiogram tests are normally only performed when the other diagnostic exams fail.
  • Blood Cost Tests – you may also need to undergo tests to determine if you blood clots anywhere in your body. Blood clots are diagnosed through blood tests, ultrasounds, MRI’s and venography.
